Paris! City of Love, fashion capital of Europe and from 30 November to 2 December 2018 also host city of the Paris Model United Nations Conference (PAMUN) organised by Ouriel Reshef and the American School of Paris.
With around 800 students from all over the world joining the MUN conference every year, PAMUN is one of the largest simulations of the United Nations for young people in Europe. BHAK/BHAS Grazbachgasse was the only Austrian school that participated in it this year and so 12 of our students joined students from 17 other countries, such as Taiwan, the USA, Morocco, Mexico, and Russia, to debate on a variety of current political, social and cultural topics. Representing the countries of Pakistan and Syria, our students tackled issues such as corruption in sporting events, food safety, or gender mainstreaming in all sectors of the economy; all while establishing valuable con-tacts and making new friends.
Of course our weeklong trip to the French capital was not purely a diplomatic mission and networking event but also an expedition dedicated to indulge in Parisian culture. Therefore, we visited the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, took a stroll along Champs-Élysées and river Seine, climbed the Eifel Tower, enjoyed the Picasso and van Gogh exhibitions at Musée d’Orsay, and got mesmerised by the catacombs deep below the streets of Paris. The nativity scene at Notre Dame simply blew us off our feet and so did the view from the top of Montmartre. We danced in front of the famous Moulin Rouge and had the best time at the Christmas market in La Défense. And then there was the food. Duck, crêpes, escargots, and frog’s legs were just a few of the French delicacies we tried, but it was the macarons that truly won our hearts.
Despite the riots in Paris that weekend, which left more than 70 people injured, we felt nothing but welcomed by the hospitality and friendliness of the Parisians, who made us all look forward to our next trip to the City of Love.
